These pictures emerged from the “Sublimate” drawings (2019-present). They continue to be an exploration – in paint this time – of the theme of changes-of-state, but also morphed into an exploration of the temporariness of things.
One of the things I love about science is how the story it tells us is at variance with the story our senses – and common sense – tells us. The notion of the solidity of ourselves and the objects around us is put into question when we consider the nature of particles and how they make up those same things. The concept of permanence is made laughable when thinking about the world on longer timescales than our own, short lives.
The Ephemerize pictures, like the Sublimate drawings, explore the nature of change. They are snapshots of objects that ask us to question their permanence, but hopefully in a way that reveals the beauty inherent in change.
Absolutely nothing is wasted in this universe. And while I may wish for things to remain the way I like them (whenever I do like them) they never do. It’s healthier for me to learn to find the beauty in the changes I see around me rather than get upset about them.
